The protagonist of the film La Villa Cavrois, Paul Cavrois, was a textile industrialist who ran his business in the early 20th century in the far north of France. He decided to build a mansion near his factories for his family and servants. He initially approached the renowned urban planner Jacques Gréber about the project, but was not satisfied with his proposal. It was only after meeting Robert Mallet-Stevens that he entrusted him with the work, giving him complete creative freedom.

For the first time, the architect was given the opportunity to take full responsibility for the project. The result was a cohesive work of architectural art that reflected his vision. The villa stood out from the neighboring houses; its style was marked by boldness and modernity. It even set trends for our time: air, light, work, sports, hygiene, comfort, and efficiency. The villa’s opening was timed to coincide with the wedding of Genevieve, the Cavrois couple’s eldest daughter.

The informational film La Villa Cavrois 2021 offers a tour of the famous Villa Cavrois, which opened in northern France in 1932 and became a true architectural manifesto. The film was directed by Robert Mallet-Stevens. The villa is a large Art Nouveau mansion. Its total area is 3,800 square meters. Of this, 1,840 square meters are living spaces, while 830 square meters are occupied by terraces. The building is sixty meters long.

The villa has seen both its heyday and its decline. When the Cavrou family took refuge in Normandy during the war, the Germans used it as a barracks. After returning from evacuation, Paul Cavrou wanted to make changes to the building. After Lucie Cavrois’s death in 1985, the villa was abandoned and looted by vandals, and it wasn’t until 2004, under the patronage of the French government, that restoration work began to transform it into a museum.
