Yann Nguema, light virtuoso
Yann Nguema, light virtuoso
The documentary Yann Nguema, light virtuoso explores the work of the great lighting designer Yann Nguema. Yann’s fascination with light began with music; he was the bassist for the well-known band Ez3kiel, after which he found his calling in graphic design and became a programmer. His new direction ultimately led him to become a multimedia artist, creating incredible visual compositions of light and sound.
In 2016, Yann Ngema won the top prize — the Trophy of Light — at a light festival in France, where he innovatively combined dynamic lighting with laser beams. Two years later, he was commissioned to design a display for the city of Metz and staged an incredible show, using the contours of buildings as giant projection screens.
Yann Nguema works in various formats; he can create an intimate artistic spectacle or gigantic light compositions. His works mesmerize the viewer; they resemble magic, and the illusions created using various technologies leave a lasting impression.
In movie Yann Nguema, light virtuoso, viewers will see a clip from the 3D projection mapping show that took place at Lyon’s Saint-Jean Cathedral during a major festival. The French Festival of Light is a major international event where the best artists present their light installations. For four evenings, the audience can’t take their eyes off the spectacle. Yann Nguema amazed with his experiments; in 2016, he was the best, and no one else did anything like him. He presented a design inspired by a medieval stained-glass window featuring a rose; the interplay of warm and cool light created a unique poetic atmosphere. The film was commissioned by Studio Museum and produced by French filmmakers in 2018.
