The 2025 film The Goldstein Residence invites viewers to explore a unique example of residential architecture. This mansion is situated atop one of Hollywood’s hills. It was designed by architect John Lautner, who is recognized as a classic of modernist architecture. However, for some reason, he did not complete the project and never returned to it for the rest of his life.

Thus, the house came into James Goldstein’s possession unfinished. The new owner invited Lautner’s former colleagues to complete the project. He also enlisted James Turrell to work on it. The result was a cave-like house on a cliff, overhanging a canyon and surrounded by lush greenery. It offered the best view of Los Angeles.

The full name of the house is the Sheets-Goldstein Residence. James Goldstein retained the name of the former owners; the mansion was originally intended for the Sheets couple. John Lautner was famous for his futuristic and fantastical house designs. In real life, he was known as an enigmatic figure. James Goldstein is no less eccentric and mysterious than the architect himself. As a result of his efforts, the house features unusual elements, including several panoramic bathrooms and its own nightclub.

James Goldstein went to great lengths to showcase his home, featured in the project The Goldstein Residence. He allowed it to be used as a filming location for commercials for Hugo Boss, Dior, and other brands. The estate has served as a filming location for iconic works such as Charlie’s Angels and The Big Lebowski, music videos by various artists, and even an R-rated film. Not long ago, James Goldstein donated his mansion to a special museum in Los Angeles that specializes in contemporary art.
